چکیده

This is the first report of Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope observations of the quasar 3C 454.3, which has been undergoing pronounced long-term outbursts since 2000. The data from the Large Area Telescope (LAT), covering 2008 July 7– October 6, indicate strong, highly variable γ-ray emission with an average flux of ∼ 3×10 photons cm s, for energies > 100MeV. The γ-ray flux is variable, with strong, distinct, symmetrically-shaped flares for which the flux increases by a factor of several on a time scale of about three days. This variability indicates a compact emission region, and the requirement that the source is optically thin to pair-production implies relativistic beaming with Doppler factor δ > 8, consistent with the values inferred from VLBI observations of superluminal expansion (δ ∼ 25). The observed γ-ray spectrum is not consistent with a simple power-law, but instead steepens strongly above ∼ 2 GeV, and is well described by a broken power-law with photon indices of ∼ 2.3 and ∼ 3.5 below and above the break, respectively. This is the first direct observation of a break in the spectrum of a high luminosity blazar above 100MeV, and it is likely direct evidence for an intrinsic break in the energy distribution of the radiating particles. Alternatively, the spectral softening above 2GeV could be due to γ-ray absorption via photonphoton pair production on the soft X-ray photon field of the host AGN, but such an interpretation would require the dissipation region to be located very close (. 100 gravitational radii) to the black hole, which would be inconsistent with the X-ray spectrum of the source. CLASS B 0827 + 525 : ‘ Dark lens ’ or binary radio - loud quasar ?

We present radio, optical, near-infrared and spectroscopic observations of the source B0827+525. We consider this source as the best candidate from the Cosmic Lens AllSky Survey (CLASS) for a ‘dark-lens’ system or binary radioloud quasar. The system consists of two radio components with somewhat different spectral indices, separated by 2.815 arcsec. VLBA observations show that each component ha...

An Intrinsic Absorption Complex toward Rx J1230.8+0115: Geometry and Photoionization Conditions

We present Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph and Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer spectra of the quasar RX J1230.8+0115 (V 1⁄4 14:4; z 1⁄4 0:117). In addition to Galactic, Virgo, and intervening absorption, this quasar is host to a remarkable intrinsic absorption complex. Four narrow absorption line systems, strong in C iv, N v, and O vi, lie within 5000 km s 1 o...

We present deep Keck LRIS spectroscopy of the host galaxy of 3C48. Our observations at various slit positions sample the different luminous components near the quasar, including the apparent tidal tail to the NW and several strong emission line regions. By fitting Bruzual & Charlot (1996) population synthesis models to our spectra, we obtain ages for the most recent major episodes of star forma...

HST Imaging of z > 0 . 4 Quasar Host Galaxies Selected by Quasar Radio and Optical Properties

A sample of 16 quasars selected from the Large Bright Quasar Survey in the redshift range 0.4 < z < 0.5 has been imaged in the R band with the Planetary Camera on the WFPC2 instrument of the Hubble Space Telescope. The host galaxy magnitudes are mostly similar to or brighter than L∗, and the host luminosity is positively correlated with the luminosity of the quasar nuclear component. There is n...

Catalog of 3 < z < 5.5 Quasar Candidates Selected among XMM-Newton Sources and Its Spectroscopic Verification

We have compiled a catalog of 903 quasar candidates (including known quasars) at 3 < z < 5.5 selected among X-ray sources from the XMM-Newton serendipitous survey (3XMM-DR4 catalog). We used photometric SDSS, 2MASS, and WISE data to select the objects. The surface number density of objects in our sample exceeds that in the SDSS spectroscopic quasar sample at the same redshifts by a factor of 1....
